| According to a Harris Poll, most people who smoke would like to quit. Yet, despite being well aware of the health hazards of smoking, they cant kick the habit. According to the poll, most people who smoke believed that smoking increased their chances of getting lung cancer and heart disease. Most also believed that by continuing to smoke, they were shortening their lives.
But the most eye opening finding was that 80% reported that had tried to quit, but werent able to do so. Some reported trying to quit as many as eight times. So why is quitting so hard? There are three main reasons:
- Nicotine Addiction
- Psychological dependence on cigarettes
- Habit
Nicotine Addiction if you smoke more than ten cigarettes a day, there is a very good chance that you are addicted to your cigarettes. See the article called "Am I Addicted?" to find out.
Psychological Dependence Nicotine is a powerful drug that calms you down when you are feeling stressed out. Thats why so many people who smoke have become dependent on their cigarettes as their main way of dealing with stress.
Habit Do you light up every time you get in the car in the morning? How about after eating lunch or dinner? Do you always have a cigarette after work or while drinking a cocktail? If so, you have formed a habit between those activities and smoking.
