Dealing With Your Cravings
Cravings are one of the most important reasons why you smoke. Here are some of the most common times to get a craving:
  • After a meal
  • Walking the dog
  • Reading the newspaper
  • Driving the car
  • Feeling angry
  • Feeling nervous

Cravings can be very dangerous because they are often responsible for slip-ups. That’s why learning how to recognize them and learning what to do when you have one are very important parts of becoming a nonsmoker.

WARNING: Don’t try to quit smoking without having a specific plan to combat your cravings. They will definitely occur and have caused many people to have a relapse.

Cravings only last about five minutes or so, whether you light up or not. In the first few days of quitting, you may find yourself bombarded with one craving after another. The good news is that these cravings soon become less intense, shorter in duration, and less frequent.

After the first couple of days of quitting, you will have fewer cravings. After a few weeks, the almost overpowering desire to smoke will become much less intense. And the cravings that lasted 5 minutes in the beginning, will last for only a few seconds, like a fleeting thought.
