| Habits are created when you make a connection between two things over and over again. Eventually, those two things seem as though they must go together and if you try to separate them, it seems as if something is missing.
Lets look at a list of common things associated with smoking:
- Getting into the car
- Arriving at work
- Finishing a meal
- Drinking a cup of coffee
- Watching TV
- Sipping a cocktail
- Talking on the phone
- Reading the newspaper
The question is, do these things really go together or did you form the connection? For example, when you first started to drive, did you always light up a cigarette? Did you always smoke a cigarette after you ate dinner or while you were drinking coffee? Obviously not. But, over time, you did these things together so often that they became part of each other.
Quit Tip: Some helpful ways to break the habit of smoking include smoking your cigarette with the opposite hand or in a different room than you are used to. Try to make the way you smoke feel different so that the connection you have formed is broken.
When you try to break the habit part of why you smoke, things may seem unnatural for a while. You may feel as though something is missing when you get in your car in the morning. You may not feel so relaxed after dinner or while you are reading the newspaper. But dont worry, over time, the connection will be broken, and the habit will be gone.
