House Rules When Trying To Quit
It can be very challenging to ask someone you live not to smoke around you because you are trying to quit. You may be worried that your request may be unreasonable or that the other person may not want to cooperate. After all, it’s their place too. Well, the good news is that there are many people who have been in this exact situation and figured out ways to compromise.

One of the first things to do is to try and get the person you live with to become one of your biggest supporters. Here are some suggestions on how to do that:

  • Tell them that you are trying to quit
  • Let them know how important quitting is to you
  • Tell them that you see quitting as a huge challenge and you will need some help
  • Ask for their assistance
  • Avoid trying to convince them to quit along with you

There are very few people who would not be willing to help you once they know how important quitting is to you. In fact, many will secretly be envious and wish they too wanted to quit.

Here are some other specific house rule suggestions you might make:

  • Ask them to put away all ashtrays and lighters.
  • Ask them to keep all cigarettes out of your sight.
  • Ask that all visitors smoke outside.
  • Ask that they not offer you any cigarettes.
  • Ask that they smoke outside when you are home.

You may run into some trouble convincing someone to smoke outside when you are home. Try telling them that when they smoke around you, the smell of the cigarettes drives you crazy and makes you want to have one. Explain that by smoking outside, they will be helping you quit. Remember to let them know how important quitting is to you and that you need their support to succeed.

Quit Tip: Despite all of your efforts at diplomacy, some people still won’t agree to smoke out of the house. One possible solution is to designate one room in the home as the smoking room. Try to make it a room with a window that can be opened and a door that can be closed.
