Before you give quitting a try, it makes sense to know if you are really ready to quit. Your answers to these questions will let you know if you are ready.
- Do you have one or more specific, personal reason to quit smoking? (Like quitting for your health or because you want to save money.)
- Are your reasons for quitting very important to you?
- Are you willing to go through some temporary discomfort in order to quit smoking for good?
- Can you name at least one person who will support you as you go through the quitting process?
- Would you be willing to possibly gain a few pounds (temporarily) in order to finally quit smoking for good?
If you answered yes to at least two of the questions above, you are ready to quit smoking. In fact, the more yes responses you have to these questions, the better is your likelihood of successfully quitting. If you answered no to four or more of these questions, right now is probably not be the best time for you to try and quit smoking. If this is your situation, there are still things you can do. For example, try and come up with a few personal reasons to quit. Here are some examples:
- Save money
- Improved health
- Freedom from an addiction
- Fresher breath
- Cleaner teeth
- Fewer facial wrinkles
- Live longer
- Set a good role model for kids
Quitting smoking is going to be one of the biggest challenges you will ever face. Having personal reasons to quit and the supportive of friends and family are keys to success. But most important of all, make sure you have a clad-tight quit smoking plan. Your plan should help you learn how to cope with stress differently and give you practical tips for dealing with your triggers to smoke.
