| Dear ___________
I want to express to you my understanding of how difficult quitting smoking can be. I have read about how for most people who smoke, there is a part of them that wants to quit and a part of them that wants to still smoke. I have also learned about the benefits of smoking. How smoking helps a person relax and deal with stress. I know that smoking can be enjoyable and even fun to do.
The last thing I want to do is come across as judgmental about your smoking. I am not blaming you for smoking and I truly understand how addicting cigarettes can be. My only goal in writing this letter is to express my desire to help you quit, should you decide to give quitting a try.
If you think you are ready to try and quit, I am asking that you tell me specific ways that I can be of help. For example, I have learned that when a person quits smoking the first few weeks are very challenging. I would like to make those first few weeks as stress free as possible for you. I also learned that during those first few weeks you might get moody and that this is a natural and normal part of quitting. Please think of me as someone who understands what you will be feeling.
I read that its common for people trying to quit to slip. If this happens, I will be very supportive because I understand that cravings and temptations to smoke can be overwhelming at times. I would also want to help you pinpoint the feelings and/or situations that led to the slip so that we can plan on how to avoid them in the future.
I really care about you and your health and I want to see you live a healthy and enjoyable life. When you are ready to give quitting a try, I am ready to help.
Love,
___________
